Former Manor resident Aubrey Callan awarded Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers

            Aubrey Callan, formerly of Manor and now residing in Mountain, Ontario has been presented with the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers by Governor General Julie Payette at a March ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. The Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in many fields.

            As an official Canadian honour, thr Medal for Volunteers incorporates and replaces the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award. The medal builds on the legacy and spirit of the Caring Canadian Award by honouring the commitment and dedication of volunteers.

            Petty Officer 1st Class Aubrey Callan, C.D. has volunteered with the Royal Canadian Legion and numerous civic organizations dedicated to serving veterans in his community for the past 40 years. This award is a well-deserved acknowledgement of Aubrey's commitment to the Legion and to veterans over many decades and is a great achievement in itself, as the criteria for the medal are very demanding. Candidates must have demonstrted an exemplary commitment through their dedicated volunteerism.

            Aubrey is the son of the late John and Audrey Callan. He was born and raised in Manor, Saskatchewan. Aubrey joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1958. His sisters, Arlene, Sharon and Sandra are especially proud of Aubrey and appreciate that his committment and dedication to the veterans of Canada's military has been acknowledged.
