Statement from South East Cornerstone Public School Division

Re: K-5 Christmas Concert at Oxbow Prairie Horizons School

On Thursday, December 19th, the K-5 children of Oxbow Prairie Horizons School located in Oxbow, Saskatchewan, put on a Christmas production for the school community.

SECPSD apologizes that some of the content was found to be disrespectful to some members of our school community. This was not the intent. At no point was there meant to be a political agenda or an anti-oil and gas industry message. The concert is a staple of the community and is a celebration of children. It is an annual community highlight.

The production was chosen by staff as there was an opportunity for all of the children to be in engaged in the performance. The music was peppy and there was a belief that the children would enjoy the songs and performing it. The overall theme focused on recycling and sustainability. The children were performing for their parents, families and community members and they are proud of their efforts and should be recognized for that.

We will learn from this event and commit to moving forward.

We would respectfully ask that if parents or community have further questions or concerns that they contact the school after the staff return from their Christmas vacation. The school and system are on break at this time.

We have received many media requests as have community members. Please respect the privacy of our students and families both in social and mainstream media. We respectfully ask that any pictures or video shared of children on social media be removed unless permission has been granted by the parent.
