Close games for the PureChem Cougars

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars took on the Redvers Rockets, Wednesday, Dec. 13. The away game was a close one for the Cougars, but they were unable to upset the Rockets who hold second place in league standings (information up-to-date as of Dec. 18).

                  The Carlyle PureChem Cougars took on the Redvers Rockets, Wednesday, Dec. 13. The away game was a close one for the Cougars, but they were unable to upset the Rockets who hold second place in league standings (information up-to-date as of Dec. 18).

                  The Rockets came out strong with a 3-1 lead after the first with Brett Turgeon scoring the lone goal for the Cougars assisted by Mark Shaw and Kelly Currie.

                  Heading into the second the Cougars attempted to claw back scoring two more: Brent McLean from Jordan Fox and Branden Lequyer followed by Ben Johnstone assisted by Brett Turgeon and Mark Shaw. However, the Rockets weren’t about to roll over gaining three goals in the second, leaving the score 6-3.

                  The Cougars rallied together in the final period with Cooper Fox scoring off an assist by Mark Shaw and Ben Johnstone, which was followed by a goal from Joel Mack from Jordan Fox and Brayden Starr. Bringing the score to 6-5, the Cougars pushed on but in the last five seconds of play, the Rockets’ Kevin Mann assisted by Drew Hoff and Jordan Miller clenched the win, ending in a 7-5 victory for the Rockets.

                  The PureChem Cougars then took on the Midale Mustangs on Saturday, Dec. 16, where they battled hard, looking for a win. Coming out strong the PureChem Cougars scored three goals in the first period: Mark Shaw assisted by Ben Johnstone and Blair Toms, Cooper Fox assisted by Brett Turgeon and Terrance Ross, and Cooper Fox off the sticks of Mark Shaw and Brett Turgeon. This left the Cougars up 3-0 after the first.

                  In the second the Mustangs came to play as they rang the bell four times, while keeping the PureChem Cougars scoreless in the second.

                  An exciting third period saw the PureChem Cougars in a focused run at the win as Cooper Fox scored a hat trick, his third goal coming off a pass from Ben Johnstone. This led the team’s to face-off in a sudden death overtime.

                  Half way through the overtime period, however, the Midale Mustangs’ captain Braden Kmita found the netting off a pass from Garrett Sherlock and Brad Tomiski.
