Cougars’ regular season winding down

The Cougars ended 2019 with a record of 6-7-0, giving them 12 points and in 5th place in the standings.  The Cougars had three games before the Christmas break and they started in Kipling on the Dec. 20.  The final score of this match was 7-2 for Carlyle with J. Matthewson scoring twice and Turgeon, Rose, McLean, Fox and McGonigal also hitting the back of the net.  J. Matthewson, Johnstone, Turgeon, Fleck, McGonigal and Struthers all got an assist and Rose earned 2 assists.

It was off to the Yellow Grass barn on the 21st to battle the Wheat Kings.  The score ended with a 7-4 loss for the Cougars.  It was a better game to watch then what the score would say.  A well battled game that has unfortunately left us with two players out for the season.  Tyler Matthewson, has some torn muscles and Billy Greenwood hanging out in Regina and having surgery for a broken leg.  Johnstone, Liboiron, Fleck and Struthers all had goals, with helpers from Geiger, Fox, Shaw(2), Boutin and Struthers.

Monday, Dec. 23, the Cougars were off to Wawota for a tense game with the Flyers.  McGonigal had the lone goal of the first period, with help from Turgeon and J Matthewson.  Cougars sniped first in the second with an unassisted goal from Turgeon.  Wawota responded and it was 2-1 Cougars after two.  Wawota took charge scoring 2 goals in the third with their last goal scored with only 2 minutes left, to win the game.

It was onto 2020, with two more battles against Yellow Grass left.  The first battle was on the 3rd and it was one heck of a game! 2-1 Yellow Grass after the first. 3-2 Cougars after the second and tied at 3 the end of regulation.  Off to OT with The Wheat Kings coming out the winners.  These two teams play again on the 17th and the Cougars are looking forward to another great game.  Scoring for the blue and white were: Johnstone with 2 and Fleck getting the first of the game.  J. Matthewson, Turgeon, Fox all earned single assists and Struthers had two.

Our Sunday night game awarded the Cougars with 2 points as they beat the Mustangs 8-2.  Scoring in the first were: Struthers with the first and fourth goals, J Matthewson and Currie, each with one.  Giving the Cougars an 8-0 lead at the end of the second were: Shaw, Geiger, Johnstone and Rose.

The Cougars would like to thank their 7th “men” that escorted them onto the ice for their two home games, namely Jax Brown and Noah Bloomfield.

The Cougars have this week off and then it’s the battle against Yellow Grass, in Carlyle on the 17th.  This will also be the last night to qualify for the Pharmasave Chance To Win $25,000.

It is off to Arcola on the 25th, to battle the Combines and then our last regular season game is on the 31st, when we host the Wawota Flyers.  This will be the $25,000 night.

                  See you at the rink!
