Shawna Cudmore of Wawota, SK contacted the Observer to inquire about the possibility of a story about her nephew, Theoren West and you’ll be glad she did. In a time where sports, especially school sports, are being delayed or cancelled with no hope of returning soon, the accomplishments of this Grade 12 student from Wawota should not go unmentioned.

After years of working on his golf game to qualify for higher level competition, West shared, “I was upset that the fall school golf was cancelled, however, I was able to compete in the Maple Leaf Junior Tour all summer.” Winning two tournaments and collecting the most points in all of Saskatchewan for his age group, his scores in Saskatoon, Estevan, Regina, Warman and Swift Current positioned West for the invitation to the national tournament in Surrey, B.C.

“I thought the experience was awesome,” West shared. “I got to compete against the best junior golfers in Canada. The Morgan Creek Golf Course and the drive through the mountains to get there was beautiful.”

After three rounds and scores of 78, 77 and 79, West finished in eighth place and was awarded the MJT Saskatchewan Order of Merit for player ability and frequency of participation.

West shared his goal: “I would love to get a scholarship to an American school so I can golf year-round but because of COVID I am not sure how that would work.”

When asked his encouragement for other young people attempting to practise and perfect their sports or skills during this restrictive season, West responded, “With COVID there are a few more rules to follow but don’t let that stop you. If it is golf you love, work on all parts of your game. Find family and friends to help you and don’t let one bad shot derail your game.”
